Each day when medical physicist Dr. Paul Sourivong comes to work at our hospital, he makes it his goal to treat patients the same way as he treats his family members.

Dr. Sourivong’s career began in Slovakia. There, he earned a doctorate degree in physical electronics and optics from Comenius University.

In 1992, Dr. Sourivong moved to the United States and earned a master’s degree in applied physics from Minnesota State University. He later earned a PhD in physics from the University of North Dakota in 1999.

Over the next four years, Dr. Sourivong served as Captain, Nuclear Medical Science Officer for the U.S. Army Center for Health and Preventive Medicine in Aberdeen, Maryland. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and spent two years as a medical physics resident at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology.

In his most recent position prior to joining Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Dr. Sourivong worked as a medical physicist at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana for five years. During this time, he provided physics and dosimetry services, including research on radiation techniques and treatment planning for patients with various cancer types.

In December 2009, Dr. Sourivong joined the Radiation Oncology Department at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center. He says he came to CTCA because of the innovative technology CTCA is able to offer patients, as well as the team approach to patient care.

Dr. Sourivong has published works in various medical journals, including the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Medical Physics, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Material and Medical Hypotheses. He is a member of the American Association of Physicist in Medicine.
