For Barry Calvert, Occupational Therapist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, connecting with patients is his passion. “My patients inspire me as I watch them stay positive and hopeful throughout their cancer journey,” says Calvert.
Calvert joined CTCA® in April 2015. Working with patients, he addresses physical issues that may need attention and teaches therapeutic exercises to help restore quality of life. Calvert also helps patients regain autonomy by recommending occupational therapy modifications that may be made at home and at the hospital. He has helped develop new programs to help keep CTCA patients active, including geocaching and scavenger hunts.
Calvert served in the Army National Guard for 24 years. While serving as team leader during Desert Shield/Storm, he was responsible for medical processing and treatment at various holding locations in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. After receiving a commission as an officer, Calvert commanded soldiers who provided medical support for port operations in Alexandria, Egypt. As commander of the 1st Medical Company, 1st U.S. Army Support Battalion, Calvert was responsible for the welfare and quality of life of nine officers and 50 enlisted soldiers in Sinai, Egypt, during a yearlong deployment in support of the Multinational Force and Observers.
Calvert earned his Bachelor of Science degree in occupational therapy from Oklahoma University Health Science Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He then completed his Master of Arts degree in health care administration at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Calvert has developed his approach to occupational therapy after years of working with families as a staff therapist in various hospital and health care settings. He is registered, licensed and certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
