“I enjoy working at CTCA as a member of a team helping patients and their families fighting cancer,” says Dr. Yixiu Kang, medical physicist in the Radiation Oncology Department at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Kang earned a Ph.D. in physics from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where she also earned a master’s degree in computer science. During her doctoral program, Dr. Kang taught physics labs for science and engineering majors. She then went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Before moving to the United States, Dr. Kang had earned both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nuclear physics from Peking University in Beijing, China. While in China, she received several science and physics awards and scholarships.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Kang spent five years as a Clinical R&D Research Scientist at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. There, she took courses, conducted research, and gained clinical experience in radiation oncology medical physics.

In addition, Dr. Kang has co-authored articles in several publications, including the Journal of Medical Physics and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics. She has also presented at various conferences over the years, including the 50th American Association of Physicists in Medicine Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas (in 2008) and the 49th American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, California (in 2007).

Dr. Kang joined CTCA in January 2009. When describing her role at CTCA, Dr. Kang says: “Working alongside other members in the Radiation Oncology Department, my goal is to assure safe, precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment to cancer patients using state-of-art technology."

When asked what she likes most about working at CTCA, Dr. Kang says, “What attracted me to CTCA was the integrative approach to patient care, and the cutting-edge technology in radiation treatment used here.”
