“I consider it a deep honor to walk with patients in their journeys. I admire their courage as they journey towards hope and healing,” says Katrina Bogdon, a naturopathic clinician in the Naturopathic Medicine Department at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern).

With an interest in botanicals (herbal medicine), cardiology, and oncology, Bogdon uses natural medicine to create and support patients’ health. “To heal means to become whole once again; and this is exactly what naturopathic medicine teaches. I am here to respectfully and compassionately help people find wholeness again in their lives,” says Bogdon.

Bogdon earned a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Her additional coursework included somatic re-education, massage, botanicals, and homeopathy. She also completed a year-long internship with a naturopathic focus in cardiopulmonology. Bogdon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics from the University of Arkansas, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Bogdon worked for two years as clinic synthesis course facilitator and organizer at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland. She also spent time as a volunteer for Americorps, in which she educated youth and the general public about issues of global hunger and sustainable development at Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas.

Before becoming a staff naturopathic clinician at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center, Bogdon completed a two-year naturopathic oncology residency at the hospital. Of her decision to join CTCA, Bogdon says: “When I came to CTCA to do a preceptorship experience in November 2006, I had no original intention of doing a residency here. However, after having the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and seeing the work that CTCA does, I was enthusiastically filling out all the paperwork.”

Bogdon says CTCA hospitals are unique in offering naturopathic medicine within a patient-centered, integrative environment. “Rarely is naturopathic medicine offered as an option in a hospital. However, this trend is growing and CTCA has been one of the industry leaders in making this service offering available,” says Bogdon.

Bogdon says she values the whole-person approach to cancer treatment at CTCA. “We are not only looking at the cancer but at the complete person—body, mind and spirit,” she says. This also means if a patient is dealing with both cancer and heart disease, the Naturopathic Medicine department at CTCA is capable of addressing both.

Our integrative care model is carried out using a team approach, says Bogdon. The naturopathic medicine team consults on a regular basis with medical and radiation oncologists, as well as the nutrition, pain management, oncology rehabilitation, mind-body medicine, and pastoral care teams. “It is the complete approach that makes the difference,” Bogdon asserts.

According to Bogdon, naturopathic therapies can help reduce the side effects of conventional cancer treatments and support the immune system. The naturopathic medicine team also provides education about lifestyle and environmental influences of cancer.

“As a naturopathic doctor I am a teacher, but the patients also teach me. It is a blessing to learn from them each and every day through the sacred act of being present and listening,” says Bogdon.

Bogdon is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Oklahoma Naturopathic Physicians Association, and Arkansas Naturopathic Physicians Association.
