“My goal for patients is to empower them to do everything they can for themselves in order to heal, and to walk with them on that journey,” says Katherine Neubauer, ND. A naturopathic medicine resident at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern), Neubauer is dedicated to whole-person care and patient education.
“Many patients tell me that they chose CTCA for its integrative approach. The CTCA Naturopathic Medicine Program raises up the patient’s healing at the center of their care. We offer individualized, evidence-based resources for fighting cancer and strengthening the patient’s healing process,” says Neubauer.
Neubauer earned a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. As part her doctoral training, she completed preceptorships in oncology, diabetes, and women's medicine. Neubauer also holds professional certifications in environmental medicine, allergy, and autism therapies.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned the Regents’ and Chancellor's scholarship, graduated with highest honors, and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa.
A former university lecturer, Neubauer has attended 47 medical seminars and conferences. She also helped the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) Student Liaison coordinate networking events that advanced relationships between ACAM and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP).
Neubauer has coauthored presentations for the American Public Health Association annual meeting and for a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) annual conference. She also coauthored a systematic review of patient education materials that was published to institutional partners of the California Infertility Prevention Project.
Neubauer has extensive experience in nutritional, botanical and homeopathic medicine for oncology patients. She is also fluent in Spanish.
In November 2008, Neubauer joined Southwestern’s Naturopathic Medicine Department. Of her experience at CTCA, Neubauer says “Our patients and their families are fighters. They’ve been researching online, trying to find every resource that they can. This can get pretty overwhelming and exhausting. Naturopathic medicine takes that burden off their shoulders.”
Neubauer says that she and the other naturopathic medicine clinicians try to focus on the evidence-based natural therapies that can most benefit a patient. “Patients feel strengthened and relieved when they know that they’re doing everything they can to support their healing. Physically, patients are often able to stay stronger through treatment, receive more treatment, and heal faster,” she says.
When asked what she likes best about working at CTCA, Neubauer says “I enjoy the innovation and compassion here. This team embodies both the science and the art of medicine.”
Neubauer says she also appreciates being able to work alongside other clinicians at CTCA. “We work with virtually every department in the hospital. I’m excited about Southwestern’s current and upcoming innovations in the team approach to care,” she says.
Neubauer is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American College for Advancement in Medicine, and the Oklahoma Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
