For 25 years, Jayne Shalby has attended to the medical needs of pediatric and adult patients as a physician assistant (PA). She joined CTCA in 2007, bringing with her vast experience in diagnosis, treatment, surgical assistance and acute, chronic and urgent care.

“There is more to healing than just giving medicine,” emphasizes Shalby. “I feel CTCA strives to offer that—a smile, a hand to hold, guidance in making treatment choices and help in fighting the fight.”

Previously, Shalby served as the sole practitioner for a community health clinic in Dodge City, Kansas. She performed patient assessments, evaluations and history collections for an underserved, Hispanic population. Her responsibilities included performing gynecological and pre-natal exams and educating her patients on their medical conditions, treatments and lifestyle changes.

She spent over a decade as a PA with Family Practice Associates in Dodge City. Performing physical assessments and evaluations, prescribing medication and administering care were all routine activities for Shalby. On average, she helped to diagnose and treat 15 to 30 patients a day.

Shalby obtained significant experience in gynecologic oncology at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, California in the early 1990s. She worked alongside a surgical oncologist, following many patients through their cancer diagnosis and treatment. She performed cervical and vulvar biopsies and assisted in gynecological surgeries and mastectomies. In addition, she helped patients with scheduling their chemotherapy and radiation treatments and followed their progress with treatment.

Shalby received her bachelor’s of science degree in allied health from Wichita State University. She also underwent post-graduate training in emergency medicine at L.A. County/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

She is certified as a PA by the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Additionally, she has certification in advanced cardiac life support, which allows her to capably aid patients who go into cardiac arrest.

One of Shalby’s strengths is her knack for presenting complex information in a clear, concise, easy-to-understand manner. Our patients appreciate her ability to help them understand details about their diagnosis and treatment.

She says, “Many times I feel that I have helped to explain an answer to a patient’s question more clearly, perhaps more in layman’s terms. I am an extension of the physician for the benefit of the patient. When we work as a team, we provide better care.”
