Jason Stevens, MA, RD, CSO, LD
Clinical Oncology Dietitian & Diabetes Program Coordinator
Registered and licensed dietitian Jason Stevens is driven to help cancer patients stay as nourished and strong as possible throughout their entire journey at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern).
“My goal is to motivate patients to make healthier choices that they can live with,” he says. “Patients are surprised to find out that there are many cancer-fighting foods they already enjoy, and I help them to discover some new ones as well.”
In his role at Southwestern, Stevens educates new patients about how to use nutrition to help their bodies stay strong throughout their fight against cancer. He works with patients to develop personalized nutrition goals and teaches those who are receiving treatment how to use nutrition to deal with side effects. In addition, Stevens helps patients who have been admitted to Southwestern as inpatients optimize their nutrition status. Furthermore, the clinical dietitian continually communicates with health professionals from other disciplines at the hospital to ensure patients’ nutrition needs are being met.
Stevens earned a master’s degree in dietetics from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, where he was a member of the Alpha Eta Society (an honor society for allied health professions) and the Student Dietetic Association. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
Stevens says above all, what attracted him to CTCA was its patient-centered model of care.
“I believe very strongly that each patient should drive his or her own healthcare, and CTCA truly empowers patients to do so,” says Stevens. “As a dietitian here, I am supported in my passion for empowering patients and helping them to make the best decisions about their nutrition care. I am also very impressed with our culinary department. I love that the wholesome foods I talk about with patients are readily available to them in the cafeteria.”
Stevens believes people who come to CTCA for cancer treatment also immediately discover what sets it apart from most hospitals and cancer centers.
He says, “Patients often tell me that they know CTCA is different the minute they walk in the door—as if they can sense that this is a place of healing and compassion. I think what they are picking up on is the personal commitment all of the staff here makes to provide the Mother Standard® of care. We care for our patients as if they were members of our own families.”
Stevens enjoys staying active in the community. He has been involved in volunteer work with people with chronic diseases and children with disabilities.
He adds, “In my spare time, I enjoy any activity that engages me creatively, whether it’s writing, music or art. The patients I meet are always a source of inspiration to me. I think I learn just as much from them as they learn from me.”
