Clinical Oncology Dietitian
“My goal is to provide cancer patients with well-researched nutrition information,” says Jasmyn Walker, a registered and licensed dietitian at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern).
Walker adds, “It is important for cancer patients to be nutritionally sound. The Nutrition and Metabolic Support Department at Southwestern provides individualized plans to help patients achieve that, including recommendations for healthy foods to eat in the hospital café and nutrition support.”
The clinical dietitian earned a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Oklahoma State University (OSU) and a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from the University of Central Missouri.
In 2007, Walker completed a dietetic internship as part of the graduate program at OSU. She did rotations at three hospitals in the Tulsa area, including Southwestern. Walker was impressed with Southwestern, and even more so with the patients who come to the center for healing and hope. In 2009, she joined the CTCA team at Southwestern.
“The integrated approach at CTCA drew me to the facility,” she says. “Each specialty, including nutrition, is of utmost importance. There’s also openness to innovation that is very inspiring to patients and professionals.”
Walker adds, “I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work among and with such distinguished individuals—both colleagues and patients.”
Building relationships is key to Walker’s role at Southwestern.
She says, “Relationships are built from the moment our patients step through the doors of our hospital. And, we not only are here to serve patients, but also their families. I have become very close to many patients and their loved ones and have learned so much from them.”
Walker also has strong relationships with many of the physicians and other clinicians at the hospital, who she works with regularly to care for patients.
She says, “I work closely with the physicians at Southwestern. Each dietitian in our department meets with a medical oncologist and his or her team on a weekly basis to discuss patients’ treatment and to work together to best meet patients’ needs throughout treatment.”
Prior to CTCA, Walker served as a dietitian for the Indian Health Care Resource Center in Tulsa. At the center, she educated patients on diabetes self management and helped research risk factors for pre-diabetes and diabetes in children ages 5 to 18.
Walker is a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and the Oklahoma Dietetic Association, as well as two specialty groups within the ADA for dietetic professionals: the Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group and the Oncology Nutrition Practice Group.
