Dr. George River brings more than 50 years of experience practicing hematology, medical oncology and internal medicine to his role as a hematologist-oncologist and medical oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center.
Dr. River earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and a medical degree from Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine. He subsequently completed an internship, a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
Dr. River began his career at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He then spent nine years as an internist specializing in hematology at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Dr. River also served as Chief of Staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. He spent 15 years in a private practice in Davenport, Iowa, where he was also on the staffs of Mercy Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital.
Additionally, Dr. River served as Medical Director of St. Luke’s Cancer Center, which he helped to earn accreditation. Following his tenure at St. Luke’s, Dr. River headed the cancer programs at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa and Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
Prior to joining CTCA in October 2008, Dr. River served as a hematologist/medical oncologist at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center/Cancer Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Throughout his career, Dr. River has presented at medical conferences and has been published in numerous clinical journals. Since 1964, he has been a clinical investigator for projects funded by the National Cancer Institute. He also spent several years as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Iowa and as a member of Marshfield Clinic’s executive committee.
Dr. River is triple-board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and the American Medical Association.
