“I am impressed with the individualized and caring approach to cancer patients at CTCA,” says Dr. Edward Abraham, a radiation oncologist at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern).

With more than 30 years of medical experience, Dr. Abraham’s interest in oncology started during high school when he worked on a research work study program at the National Cancer Institute (NIH), in which he analyzed the pattern of tumor growth and metastasis formation in animal systems.

Dr. Abraham graduated cum laude from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, applied physics and chemistry. He then went on to earn a medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston. There, he became a member of the first Health Sciences and Technology class, an innovative joint program between Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

During medical school, Dr. Abraham worked in the laboratory of Dr. Judah Folkman, where the concept of tumor angiogenesis was established. While in the Folkman lab, he investigated the role of radiation on developing non- and newly-vascularized tumor models.

Upon graduation, Dr. Abraham completed an internship and residency at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he served as Instructor of Pediatrics for 11 years. He also spent five years as a research associate for the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard University. In addition, Dr. Abraham received NIH and private foundation funding for a research fellowship investigating clinical metabolism and disease physiology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Abraham then completed a second residency in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Upon completion of this residency, Dr. Abraham was recruited as a Senior Investigator in the Radiation Oncology Branch at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH. During this time, he also served as an Assistant Professor at Uniformed Services University in Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.

After five years at NIH, Dr. Abraham was recruited as an Associate Professor at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he directed the Translational Research Program in Radiation Oncology.

While at Dartmouth, Dr. Abraham published a number of articles on his research involving cancer treatment. He also received a US patent for his novel approaches to treating bone metastases. In addition, Dr. Abraham developed original imaging techniques for earlier detection of cancer location and distribution.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Abraham served as the Chief of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Services at Saints Medical Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, a Tufts Medical School affiliate. He has also served on the faculty at Tufts-New England Medical Center (renamed Tufts Medical Center) in Boston.

Since joining Southwestern’s Radiation Oncology Department in December 2008, Dr. Abraham says he is excited to use the hospital’s cutting-edge equipment to offer the best care available for the diverse needs of cancer patients.

“This is the ideal place to translate basic ideas for cancer treatment that I’ve developed over the years,” says Dr. Abraham. “I particularly like our integration of naturopathic medicine.”

When asked what he likes most about working at CTCA, Dr. Abraham says he appreciates the great support system, the technologies, and the interesting and challenging cancer problems. “My goal for patients is to offer innovative, individualized therapy that utilizes state-of-the-art technologies,” he says.

Dr. Abraham is a member of several professional organizations, including the Radiation Research Society, the American Association for Cancer Research, Sigma Xi, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Association for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
