Dr. Edgar Staren, Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), joined CTCA in 2005 to be a part of an organization which truly puts patients first. He embraces the integrative approach to patient care at CTCA, which includes a combination of state-of-the-art technology, conventional medicine and complementary therapies—all delivered in a compassionate manner.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Staren, who is also a practicing surgical oncologist, graduated from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery training at Rush University Medical Center, and in 1988 completed a surgical oncology fellowship at Rush and Cook County hospitals. In addition, Dr. Staren earned a PhD in tumor immunobiology from Rush in 1991. In 1999, he earned a MBA from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

Before joining CTCA, Dr. Staren was Senior Attending Surgeon at the Medical College Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, as well as Attending Surgeon at both St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Vincent Mercury Medical Center. He spent seven years as a professor in the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, Ohio (this is now known as The University of Toledo College of Medicine), where he also served as Chairman and Surgery Residency Program Director. He also served as Medical Director of the Medical College of Ohio Cancer Institute.

In addition, Dr. Staren is former president of the Toledo Surgical Society, Rush Surgical Society, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for the American Cancer Society, Ohio Division.

Since 2005, Dr. Staren has been a visiting professor in the Department of General Surgery at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he previously served as Associate Dean for Medical Student Programs.

Dr. Staren is nationally recognized for his clinical and research activities as an academic surgical oncologist, with specific expertise in diseases of the breast, liver and endocrine glands. He has published extensively with over 200 scientific works, and has given over 150 presentations. Dr. Staren has also received numerous awards and honors. He has been listed in Best Doctors in America (Best Doctors, Inc.), America’s Top Surgeons (Consumers Research Council), and Top Doctors: Chicago Metro Area (Castle Connelly).

Dr. Staren belongs to numerous academic organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Association for Cancer Research. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
