In September 2007, Dr. David R. Mitchell, joined CTCA as Medical Director of Mind-Body Medicine at Southwestern Regional Medical Center. A board-certified clinical psychiatrist, Dr. Mitchell has special interest in the newly developing field of psychiatric oncology.
Dr. Mitchell earned a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. In addition, he completed a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he also completed a four-year psychiatric residency.
Dr. Mitchell comes to CTCA with extensive experience as a clinical psychiatrist in several hospital settings, including Saint Francis Hospital and Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, both in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition, Dr. Mitchell spent seven years as an associate medical staff member in the Department of Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. During that time, he was also an instructor of psychiatry and human behavior at Jefferson Medical College.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mitchell has contributed to several professional publications. He has also given numerous presentations on psychiatry, including topics such as depression, headaches, eating disorders, multiple sclerosis, and the care of critically ill patients.
At CTCA, Dr. Mitchell values the opportunity to work in an integrated, holistic system. In addition, he says: “The support received from the administration of CTCA is such a positive boost to the [mind-body medicine] program.”
Dr. Mitchell says his overall goal for his patients is to help relieve some of the distress they experience during their treatment, and for his patients to know they have been heard.
Dr. Mitchell is licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Mitchell has been a member of the American Psychiatric Association since 1983.
