Shana Deneen, ND, LAc
Meet Shana Deneen, a naturopathic clinician and acupuncturist at our hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She talks about her education and training, as well as the unique, integrated setting she practices in at Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
“As an acupuncturist and a naturopathic clinician, I have the unique opportunity to positively affect patients’ quality of life while they are going through cancer treatment,” says Shana Deneen.
In August 2010, Deneen returned to her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma for the opportunity to serve cancer patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center. A full-time acupuncturist within the hospital’s Naturopathic Medicine Department, Deneen provides acupuncture treatment to alleviate side effects associated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Common side effects acupuncture can help reduce include peripheral neuropathy, nausea/vomiting and pain. In addition, Deneen says patients who elect to have acupuncture often report increases in energy, improved sleep and digestion, and elevated mood.
She adds, “At CTCA, I am practicing in an enhanced and multidisciplinary environment with a unique and targeted level of patient care. Moreover, this unique setting gives me an opportunity to provide patients with compassionate and patient-centered care throughout their journey.”
Previously, Deneen practiced as a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist focused on women’s health at the Steelsmith Natural Health Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. She also served as a naturopathic doctor in Scottsdale, Arizona at two healthcare centers.
The acupuncturist earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona and a master’s degree in acupuncture from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Deneen was inspired to pursue a career in natural medicine while serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer. She says, “I worked as a social worker in the HIV/AIDS community and wanted to obtain the knowledge to educate others about natural foods and nutrients as well as other naturopathic modalities in order to optimize health and encourage healing.”
Deneen is a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
During her leisure time, she enjoys tennis, Pilates, hiking, live music, and spending time with friends and family.
