"My goal for patients is to help them do as well as they possibly can and to help them have as good of a quality of life as possible. I want patients to feel that someone is here to stand with them."

Dr. Robert D. McCullough
Hospitalist/Intake Physician

Prior to joining Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center, Dr. Robert McCullough spent over 30 years in general practice, internal medicine and medical oncology settings. He also served in different capacities for the American Osteopathic Association, the American Osteopathic Foundation and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.

The internist/hospitalist earned a bachelor’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He earned an osteopathic medical degree from the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. McCullough completed an internship at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa, followed by an internal medicine residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan. Dr. McCullough then moved to Houston, where he completed a medical oncology fellowship with the Department of Developmental Therapeutics at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Following his fellowship, Dr. McCullough spent nine years as an associate clinical professor of medicine at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He subsequently served for eight years as a member of the Board of Trustees at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital.

Throughout his career, Dr. McCullough has earned numerous distinctions. In 1993, he received the Outstanding and Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.

He was also named Doctor of the Year in 2001 by the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association. Dr. McCullough has also been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.

Dr. McCullough came to CTCA in March 2009. “I joined CTCA because I had been away from the oncology side for several years and this gave me the opportunity to reconnect with oncology patients and be part of their care from the general internal medicine side,” he notes.

He says he appreciates the focus on the patient at CTCA: “CTCA is very patient-oriented. The team here tries to be upbeat and helpful in every area, from the oncologists to the support areas, like nutrition, mental health and spiritual support.”

He adds, “Everyone wants to help the patient and the patients appreciate it. If we can show some mercy and be of some help, it makes it a little bit easier when you’re dealing with a disease process that’s as difficult as cancer can be.”

Dr. McCullough is a member of several professional organizations, including the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Internists, the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association and the Tulsa Osteopathic Medical Society.

He was a Deacon and former Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church. His hobbies include barbershop quartet singing.
