Matthew Perchemlides, ND, MS, RN, a naturopathic resident at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center, enjoys being able to provide individualized care to patients each day. “While providing each patient with the same standards of safety and ethics, my approach from patient to patient varies as much as one individual may vary from another,” he says.
Perchemlides earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. During his undergraduate career, he earned various scholarships for academic excellence. While at Boston College, Perchemlides was the only undergraduate student chosen to study and travel to Cuba with a group of doctoral students.
As part of this program, Perchemlides focused on healthcare policy and factors affecting asthma prevalence and treatment in both the United States and Cuba. While in Cuba, Perchemlides conducted extensive field research on adult and pediatric asthma. Upon his return, he coauthored and presented a paper detailing precise recommendations for the development of national asthma policy in Cuba and corollary recommendations for U.S. policy.
After undergraduate school, Perchemlides spent several years as a registered nurse at hospitals in Colorado and Connecticut. As a registered nurse, Perchemlides held certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Perchemlides went on to earn a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine (UBCNM). While there, he was selected to be the first naturopathic student to represent UBCNM on the newly integrated acute care medical rotation at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport.
While completing his medical degree, Perchemlides concurrently earned a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. Perchemlides graduated from UBCNM summa cum laude, and received the Award for Academic Excellence, having graduated first in his class.
Perchemlides was also involved in several projects during his tenure at UBCNM. He collaborated with Dr. Mark Sanders to offer UBCNM’s first Craniosacral Therapy Training to students, faculty, and other healthcare professionals. He also co-authored and co-facilitated The Pediatric Vaccination Schedule: A Discussion for Parents About Concerns Surrounding Childhood Vaccinations, a series of presentations offered to the public on an ongoing basis in Connecticut.
In addition, Perchemlides assisted the staff of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in the completion of two research projects that examined endothelial cell function. He also authored oncology treatment guidelines to be used by staff physicians at the Yale-Griffin Integrated Medical Center. These guidelines focused on naturopathic interventions for specific types of cancer, including recommendations for mitigating the adverse effects of common conventional treatments.
In October 2009, Perchemlides joined CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center as a naturopathic resident. When asked why he decided to join CTCA, Perchemlides says: “A profession in oncology has always appealed to me because it requires attention to all body systems and their interactions at all levels of care.”
According to Perchemlides, CTCA allows him to practice naturopathic medicine in a way that consistently puts the patient first. “In my experience working at other hospitals, I have never before witnessed the type of in-depth, patient-centered, and personalized care that is provided at CTCA, as well as the continuity of care and follow-up that CTCA has achieved.”
He adds: “At CTCA, I am supported in my efforts to fulfill the principles and highest standards that I have for myself, that my profession has for me, and that my patients deserve.”
Perchemlides is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Oklahoma Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Society of Integrative Oncology, and the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Perchemlides also holds a license in naturopathic medicine from the state of Vermont.
Of his goal for patients at CTCA, Perchemlides says, “I want my patients to live their life as they choose, with the least interference possible from their diagnosis.”
