"Cancer Treatment Centers of America is a great place to work because of the caring and compassion the physicians and staff members show towards patients and their caregivers."

Kylie Buchan, RD, CSO, LD
Clinical Oncology Dietitian

Kylie Buchan is a registered and licensed dietitian in the Nutrition and Metabolic Support Department at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southwestern Regional Medical Center (Southwestern).

Buchan earned a bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Oklahoma. Her background includes experience as a clinical dietitian at an acute care hospital in New York City. An interest in oncology nutrition brought Buchan to CTCA in 2006.

Buchan says she also enjoys being able to work with the other Southwestern departments to provide comprehensive care for each patient. She appreciates that her department is recognized by staff members as a valued part of the integrative care model.

“We spend a lot of time with our patients and caregivers to make sure they feel comfortable with the information provided,” says Buchan, who aims to be readily available to patients and their caregivers to answer questions and provide support.

Buchan enjoys working side-by-side with patients in their fight against cancer. “I love the patients here at CTCA," says Buchan. "Everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to fight the disease."

Along with her team, Buchan focuses on providing symptom-control education to make sure each patient is eating and drinking adequately during chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She says her overall goal is to build up patients’ immune systems to help fight the cancer.

In November 2008, Buchan became the first certified specialist in oncology nutrition in the state of Oklahoma. Requirements for the certification include a minimum of two years as a registered dietitian, at least 2,000 hours in the field of oncology and passing the certification exam.
