“I strive to treat each patient like I would treat a member of my own family,” says Dr. Harshad Sakhalkar, medical physicist at CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Sakhalkar earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Mumbai University in India. He moved to the United States when he was awarded a scholarship to pursue Ph.D. training in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
In 2005, Dr. Sakhalkar earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Ohio University. While at the University, Dr. Sakhalkar was selected to participate in the Robe Leadership Seminar by the University’s Russ College of Engineering Dean Committee, after which he earned designation as a Robe Scholar.
Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Sakhalkar served for four years in the Medical Physics division of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. In this role, he gained valuable experience in radiation dosimetry and medical physics, including: quality assurance for various radiation technologies, 3D and IMRT treatment planning, and special procedures like stereotactic radiosurgery and RapidArcTM.
Dr. Sakhalkar joined CTCA in November 2009. When asked why he decided to come to CTCA, he says: “I was impressed with the facility, including the state-of-art technology, emphasis on patients, holistic approach, and team camaraderie.”
Of his overall goal for patients, Dr. Sakhalkar says, “I strive to ensure that patients are offered the best possible treatment and care that I can provide for their health and well-being.”
Dr. Sakhalkar has co-authored numerous works in publications by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. His works cover a variety of radiation oncology topics, including the Varian delivery system, IMRT, and four dimensional (4D) dosimetry for radiation therapy.
