Naturopathic Medicine

naturopathic medicine

Our department

Naturopathic oncology providers are experts in our supportive care program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA). Naturopathic medicine is a tool to support oncology patients undergoing conventional treatment and in survivorship by providing supportive therapies to help with:

  • Reducing harmful side effects from  cancer treatments such as nausea, pain or fatigue
  • Improving  quality of life

Naturopathic medicine is designed to work in conjunction with conventional treatment to help address treatment-related side effects. Naturopathic medicine providers review and monitor your dietary supplements to help you avoid potential drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions.

Naturopathic therapies

Every patent at CTCA® has an option to incorporate naturopathic medicine into your care plan. If you choose to meet with an naturopathic oncology provider, he or she will review your history and make suggestions that may include:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Dietary supplements
  • Botanical and herbal medicines
  • Homeopathic remedies, mainly involving plant extracts and minerals
  • Physical therapy and exercise therapy, including massage and other gentle techniques applied to deep muscles and joints for therapeutic purposes
  • Lifestyle counseling on managing certain medical conditions with foods and nutritional supplements to reduce complications and side effects
  • Acupuncture provided by some of our naturopathic oncology providers

Our naturopathic oncology providers have extensive knowledge of the impacts of radiation, chemotherapy and other conventional cancer treatments. They are available to provide input on your treatment plan and are in regular communication with your  oncology team at CTCA. The Naturopathic Medicine Department also provides an educational component as well. Programs include information about vitamin and mineral supplements, natural remedies, nutritional guidance, lifestyle changes and stress management techniques.

The naturopathic medicine team at Southeastern

Daniel Kellman, ND, FABNO,  leads the Naturopathic Department at Southeastern as Clinical Director of Naturopathic Medicine. Kellman has been a naturopathic oncology provider at CTCA since 2006, first at Southwestern Regional Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before joining Southeastern in 2012.

A graduate of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona, Kellman has been in practice since 1998. His experience includes general naturopathic family practice, pain management, advanced immunology and integrative cancer care. Kellman has lectured on a variety of health topics and has mentored naturopathic medical students.

Kellman and other naturopathic oncology providers are available to work with you and the rest of your care team, including your medical oncologists, nutritionists and psychologists, to suggest natural therapies to help improve your quality of life.

Every naturopathic oncology provider at Southeastern has a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) degree from a doctoral-level program accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. Some members of the naturopathic medicine team have additional board certification as Fellows of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology.

Proper use of supplements

One of the roles of the Naturopathic Medicine Department at Southeastern is to educate you on the facts versus the fiction regarding supplements and other natural therapies, and to help you choose wisely from the many options available.

Our naturopathic oncology providers have extensive experience with a wide array of natural products and therapies and are continually researching the latest supplements. Your naturopathic oncology provider will monitor your supplement and vitamin intake to make sure your supplements are appropriate for you, and to help you avoid potential drug-herb and drug-nutrient interactions.

The products available at our on-site retail pharmacy have undergone rigorous quality assurance investigation.
