Dr. Giuseppe Del Priore is a renowned gynecologic oncologist who has been invited to present at medical conferences around the world. He also is an accomplished researcher and teacher who has received numerous awards.
Dr. Del Priore joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) as its National Director of Gynecologic Oncology in September 2013. He is also Southeastern Regional Director at our hospital outside Atlanta.
Prior to CTCA, Dr. Del Priore was the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianaopolis, where he directed its gynecologic oncology fellowship program and continues to teach.
Dr. Del Priore also has served as Director of Gynecologic Oncolocy at New York Downtown Hospital (2004-2009); Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York (2002-2004); and Bellevue Hospital in New York City (1991-2001). He was the Assistant Director of Gynecologic Oncology at New York University School of Medicine from 1995 to 1999.
Upon the recommendation of a CTCA employee, Dr. Del Priore decided to learn more about working at our hospitals. He was won over by the care CTCA clinicians provide to patients.
"I temporarily took care of a CTCA patient who needed admission to her local ER (my former hospital). Through her eyes and my interactions with CTCA, I saw firsthand the difference CTCA can make," says Dr. Del Priore.
"The CTCA model provides the most comprehensive care experience I have ever experienced," he says. "I have been at other highly acclaimed and internationally recognized institutions but nothing can compare to the CTCA level of care."
Dr. Del Priore earned his Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 1987. He studied at The City University of New York's Brooklyn College in a combined Bachelor of Arts/Doctor of Medicine Program, earning both degrees in seven years. Dr. Del Priore graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and was valedictorian of his medical school class.
After graduation, Dr. Del Priore had a four-year residency (1987-1991) in gynecology and obstetrics at Prentice Women's Hospital, which is affiliated with Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. In 1990, Dr. Del Priore was the Galloway Gynecologic Oncology Fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Dr. Del Priore then pursued his Master of Public Health in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which he completed in 1993.
From 1993 to 1995, Dr. Del Priore was a fellow in gynecologic oncology at Strong Memorial Hospital, which if affiliated with the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York. Dr. Del Priore had two other fellowships:
- "Frontiers in Reproduction: Molecular Biology Techniques," a program funded by the National Institutes of Health at the Marine Biology Institute in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in 2001
- History of Medicine Fellowship at the Osler Library of McGill University, Montreal, in 1987
Dr. Del Priore is an active researcher and prolific writer. He has authored and published more than 170 papers, book chapters and abstracts. His book chapters include:
- "Ovarian Transposition" (2012)
- "Chemotherapy in Pregnancy" (2012)
- "Management of the Obstetric Patient with Malignancy" (2005)
- "Strategies for Gynecologic Cancers" (2004)
In addition, Dr. Del Priore has written two books and edited three others:
- An Atlas of Gynecologic Oncology: Investigation and Surgery, editor (2011)
- Fast Facts: Gynecologic Oncology, author (2010)
- Women's Cancers: Pathways to Healing, author (2008)
- An Atlas of Gynecologic Cancer Staging, editor (2007)
- The Rochester Manual: Practical Patient Care, editor (1997)
Dr. Del Priore's research focuses on preserving fertility. He investigates"kinder, gentler" treatment options for cancer patients, including diagnostics, therapeutic and surgical interventions with less toxicity. He co-founded the Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, as well as the International Society for Fertility Preservation. Dr. Del Priore wants to provide his patients with hope, especially those with the most challenging cases, by offering the latest treatment options.
Dr. Del Priore says his patients have tended to seek "kinder, gentler" solutions for their cancers. His patients have included family members or other close personal relations. When meeting patients, Dr. Del Priore strives to learn his patients’ values and understand their goals.
"Then I use my knowledge to make that happen as much as possible," he says. "Patients are inspirational and not constrained by the medical establishment. They have their own perspective and often suggest great ideas. Each patient inspires me to look for solutions, innovations and continued professional growth."
U.S. News and World Report named Dr. Del Priore one of its "Best Doctors" in 2011 and 2012. In addition, he was one of Castle Connolly's Top Doctors® for the Indianapolis region in 2013.
Dr. Del Priore has received two patents and has others pending. He has served on several committees and organizations, including current appointments on the American Osteopathic Association Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Society of Gynecologic Oncologists; and Gynecologic Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute Cooperative Group.
In his free time, Dr. Del Priore has given back to his community by serving as a volunteer physician as part of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics; a volunteer firefighter in Westchester County, New York; a volunteer police officer with the New York Police Department; and a volunteer ambulance driver with the Bay Ridge Ambulance Volunteer Organization.
