Types of Sarcoma Cancer

Kaposi's sarcoma cancer is the presence of malignant cells in the tissues under the skin that line the mouth, nose or anus. The first sign of Kaposi's sarcoma is development of small growths on the skin, usually red, brown or purple in color. A persistent cough or abdominal pain may also indicate its presence. If you are concerned about possible Kaposi's cancer symptoms, you should consult a doctor for further consultation.

Ewing's sarcoma is related to a form of bone tumor discovered by James Ewing, MD in 1921. The differentiator between Ewing's sarcoma and other types of bone tumors, is the ability to treat it with radiation. This form of sarcoma cancer is usually found in children and involves few early symptoms which may include fatigue and stomach aches. Most often the first sign is a persistent lump on the trunk of a child that is warm to the touch and is paired with a fever. If for any reason Ewing's sarcoma cancer symptoms are suspected, you should have the child seen by a health professional.

Liposarcoma is a specific type of soft tissue sarcoma which is named after the way the tumors resemble fat tissue. Considered a low-grade sarcoma, liposarcoma consists of cells that appear closer to normal cells and with fewer cell divisions. If sarcoma cancer is detected by a doctor, the type and grade will be determined by a biopsy. The grade is useful in determining the progression of the disease that can be expected as well the prognosis for the patient. Sarcoma Cancer Treatments

Two of the most common conventional treatments for sarcoma cancer are chemotherapy and radiation. Cancer Treatment Centers of America will sometimes utilize a form of chemotherapy called fractioned dose chemotherapy. With fractioned dose chemotherapy, the dose of drugs is divided into smaller portions which are given over several days. This exposes the cancer to the drugs for a longer period of time while also reducing the unpleasant side effects that can occur with larger doses. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) utilizes an advanced computer program that plans precise doses of radiation based on a three dimensional representation of the tumor size, shape and location. This allows for higher doses of radiation to be administered directly to the tumor, while sparing more of the surrounding tissues.

In addition to the conventional treatments, CTCA also incorporates a number of complementary and alternative medicines, providing a more complete sarcoma cancer care plan. We understand that cancer affects much more than just a part of the body—it also affects spiritual, emotional and psychological well-being. CTCA will often incorporate alternative therapies such as naturopathic medicine, nutritional therapy, mind-body medicine, image enhancement and spiritual counseling to your sarcoma cancer treatment plan.
