Exercise Helps Prevent Colon, Breast Cancers

A pair of studies - one from Europe, and another from Middle America -- is providing new evidence that physical activity lowers cancer risk.

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) demonstrated that the risk of colon cancer was dramatically reduced, by 22 percent, among those participants who engaged in “vigorous” exercise. The study was reported in a recent issue of the medical journal, Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention.

Another research report, The Iowa Women’s Health Study, showed that postmenopausal women who engaged in physical activity had a 14 percent lower risk for breast cancer in general, and a 33 percent lower risk for developing aggressive breast tumors. The study appeared in a recent issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
