Know Your Treatment Options

Fortunately, there are a number of prostate cancer treatments available today. But navigating through the diagnosis and treatment process can be confusing and lead to "information overload" for you and your family. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, our multidisciplinary team can help you sort through all your options and work with you to create an individualized plan consisting of both traditional and alternative prostate cancer treatments.

Prostate Cancer: An Overview

Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in American men. It is estimated that over 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. However, while one in six men will develop the disease, less than one in 30 will die from prostate cancer, and with new detection methods and innovative prostate cancer treatments being discovered, the survival rate increases every year. Approximately two-thirds of prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65.

Besides age, race is a risk factor, as, for reasons unknown, prostate cancer is more commonly found in African American men than among white men, and occurs more often in whites than in Asian men. Nationality also plays a role, as the disease is less common in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America than in North America and Europe. Additionally, a family history of prostate cancer and a diet rich in red meat and high-fat dairy products also may contribute to a higher risk.

Doctors commonly use two detection methods to diagnose prostate cancer. The first is a digital rectal examination (DRE) during which the physician feels the prostate through the rectal wall for lumps or abnormalities. The DRE, although it has been used for years, is of limited use, as tumors may form in areas that cannot be reached. With DRE, it's also difficult to discern between benign and malignant (cancerous) tumors. The other frequently used detection method is a blood test called the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurement. PSA is an enzyme that can rise naturally in the blood as men age or if prostate abnormalities are present. Proper detection is the first step towards developing a prostate cancer treatment plan. At CTCA, we use the latest detection tools to locate prostate cancer, determine its stage, and develop a comprehensive plan that may consists of traditional, complementary, and alternative prostate cancer treatment options.

Holistic, Individualized Prostate Cancer Treatments

Prostate cancer treatments available at CTCA combine the conventional (such as surgery) and innovative methods to create a comprehensive treatment program that addresses your unique prognosis and needs.

CTCA's skilled surgeons are accomplished in the most innovative and sophisticated surgical techniques, and, as part of your care team, can contribute significantly to your overall wellness. In addition to surgery, your team may include a number of other prostate cancer treatments, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, biotherapy/immunotherapy, and hormone therapy.
