What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men besides skin cancer. In fact, more men are diagnosed with prostate cancer than women are diagnosed with breast cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that one in six men will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. More than 185,000 men are diagnosed with the disease in the United States yearly.

The prostate gland lies within the male reproductive system, sitting under the bladder and in front of the rectum. The urethra runs through the prostate. At the bottom of the prostate are sphincters that tighten to prevent urine leakage and relax to allow urine flow. The prostate produces semen and a protein called the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) which turns semen into liquid.

Over 99 percent of prostate cancer cases are adenocarcinomas, or cancers that develop in the gland cells at the surface of the prostate. Rarer types of prostate cancer take the form of sarcomas, small cell carcinomas, and transitional cell carcinomas. If prostate cancer is detected early and if prompt treatment is sought, men with prostate cancer typically have a good chance of recovery.
