Detecting Prostate Cancer
Physicians commonly use two methods for detecting prostate cancer: digital rectal examination and the prostate-specific antigen.
The digital rectal examination has been used for years as a screening test. However, its ability to detect prostate cancer is limited. This is because prostate cancer tumors often form in areas of the prostate that cannot be reached by a digital rectal examination. Clinicians can also have difficulty distinguishing between benign abnormalities and prostate cancer.
The prostate-specific antigen measurement is a blood test many physicians use to detect prostate cancer. The prostate-specific antigen is an enzyme measured in the blood that can rise naturally as men age or if prostate abnormalities are present. Unfortunately, the prostate-specific antigen test cannot distinguish prostate cancer from benign growth or other conditions, such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate). Prostate-specific antigen testing also fails to detect some types of prostate cancer.
