History of CTCA at Southwestern Regional Medical Center
- Cancer Treatment Centers of America was founded in 1988 by Richard J Stephenson in honor of his mother, who lost her battle with cancer in 1982. He was challenged to create a better experience for cancer patients that empowers them to participate in their treatment.
- On April 29th, 2005 CTCA built a brand new state of the art 195,845 square foot hospital designed around the needs of cancer patients and caregivers. More than 100 CTCA cancer patients, along with their family members and healthcare providers were involved with the hospital’s design process—from the initial building planning concepts to architectural elements, including exterior appearance, interior design, lighting and colors.
- Today, CTCA provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary path to cancer care by integrating leading-edge medical treatments with naturopathic medicine, nutrition, oncology rehabilitation, psychological counseling, spiritual support and pain management.
Hospital’s Trademark Principles
- Integrative care where oncologists work closely with staff nutritionists, mind-body therapists, naturopathic doctors, physical therapists and spiritual support to treat the whole person all under one roof.
- Mother Standard®, a standard required at CTCA that exceeds the level found at most hospitals. This is the standard of care CTCA staff would want for their own mothers. The Mother Standard® has created the “gold standard” in cancer care.
- Patient Empowerment MedicineSM, where patients and caregivers are positioned at the center of their care, voicing opinions and participating in their own treatment decisions.
- CTCA offers exclusive technologies and treatment protocols: TomoTherapy® radiation treatment to pinpoint and more safely treat cancer, and Fractionated Dose Chemotherapy to minimize the side effects of conventional chemotherapy (see “Tech” sheet).
