Dr. Maurie Markman Receives Prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology Statesman Award
Prominent Medical Oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America Honored

Philadelphia, Pa (June 6, 2011)–- Dr. Maurie Markman, Vice President of Oncology Services and National Director of Medical Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), received the esteemed American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Statesman Award. Presented annually, the Statesman Award recognizes individual ASCO members who have shown extraordinary volunteer service, dedication, and commitment to ASCO, their hospital community and the patients they serve for at least 20 years.
“I am extremely honored and humbled to accept this award,” said Dr. Markman. “My passion for the field of oncology comes from the patients and caregivers I serve on a daily basis. It is their strength, their perseverance and their overall passion for life that continues to push me to strive for excellence.”
In addition to Dr. Markman, 19 other active members of ASCO received this honor. A ceremony held at their annual meeting this afternoon at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago paid tribute to these members by presenting them with a plaque and lapel pin as a symbol of appreciation.
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Dr. Markman is leading the efforts to develop a gynecological cancer program focusing on ovarian cancer. He’s also establishing a program intended to continually update optimal treatment strategies in specific clinical settings (for example, breast or lung cancer) across CTCA’s network of hospitals and to magnify the expertise at individual centers by permitting clinicians across the enterprise to discuss best-practices and develop innovative treatment strategies to improve both the survival and quality-of-life for patients.

“We continue to be extremely proud of Dr. Markman. His enthusiasm, energy and dedication to both ASCO and CTCA, on behalf of our patients, are boundless,” said Dr. Edgar Staren, CTCA’s chief medical officer. “At CTCA, our priority has always been the patient and ensuring that patients receive the best care possible. Having Dr. Markman receive this award along with some of the nation’s best doctors reiterates the confidence we have in our physicians, nurses and staff members to provide patients with the newest and most innovative technologies and treatments.”
