Treatment for Pancreatic Cancer: TomoTherapy®
TomoTherapy® Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) is another innovative pancreatic cancer treatment option offered at CTCA.
An enhanced form of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the TomoTherapy® HI-ART System combines CT scanning technology with advanced tools for planning and delivering radiation therapy.
Immediately prior to each treatment, the TomoTherapy® HI-ART system provides 3D imaging via built-in CT scanning to verify the location of the tumor. After the CT scan is taken, your radiation therapist makes technical adjustments to accurately align the system to your precise position. This helps to target your pancreatic cancer radiation treatment as much as possible, and to avoid exposure to muscle tissue, the spine, lungs, and other sensitive organs.
Additionally, while traditional radiation therapies project radiation on a cancerous pancreatic tumor from a few directions, the TomoTherapy® Hi-ART system delivers precise and powerful doses of radiation from a full 360 degrees. The radiation beams target hard-to-reach pancreatic tumors while helping to minimize damage to nearby healthy tissues.
Specifically, the TomoTherapy® HI-ART system allows your CTCA radiation therapy team to:
- Confirm the exact shape and location of a tumor (with built-in CT scanning) seconds before your treatment begins
- Target hard-to-reach pancreatic cancer tumors by sculpting small, powerful and precise radiation beams at the tumors from a full 360 degrees
- Lessen treatment-related side effects by reducing radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissue
TomoTherapy® may be a promising treatment option for pancreatic cancer patients who have reached their maximum tolerance dosage of traditional radiation, or whose tumor is in a hard-to-reach area.
