If you’re like many cancer patients, you care about your quality of life during and after cancer treatment. The treatment choices you make now can have an impact on your physical and emotional health. We believe that an aggressive treatment plan and a tolerable treatment experience matters. Therefore, we provide you with data about the physical and emotional health of patients during treatment at our hospitals. We are constantly learning and applying state-of-the-art technology and science to improve patients’ cancer treatment, but never at the expense of a patient’s care.

Some definitions may be helpful as you read our ovarian cancer quality of life statistics:

  • Physical Health: How physically fit do you feel and how able are you to perform the daily activities of living? Can you dress, walk, eat and move from place to place with relative ease?
  • Emotional Health: How do you feel mentally? Are you depressed and anxious or more hopeful and relaxed?
  • General Population: In this case, “general population” refers to a group of 7,802 randomly selected people from the United States and Europe who were interviewed about their health by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer, a leading scientific organization. When they were surveyed, the vast majority of these people (75%) rated their current physical health status between 87 and 100, with 100 being the best possible score. That response determined the “normal health range” used here.

Emotional Health Score of Ovarian Cancer Patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America

As illustrated in the ovarian cancer quality of life information above, the average mean physical health score reported by ovarian cancer patients three months into treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) was about 74, while that of the majority of adults in the general population was somewhere between 87 and 100.

The same general population adults reported that their emotional health status was somewhere between 67 and 100. Ovarian cancer patients three months into treatment at CTCA reported an average mean emotional health status of about 69.

This means that despite undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, CTCA ovarian cancer patients report their physical and emotional health at levels close to those of adults in the general population. Our ovarian cancer team focuses on your survival, as well as on your well-being and the impact of cancer and treatment on you and your family. We use state-of-the-art technology and research to improve our patients’ cancer treatment. At the same time, we support you with therapies to boost your immune system, reduce pain and help you stay strong, because we know that managing the side effects of cancer is very important to your quality of life.

The CTCA ovarian cancer quality of life results shown above were based on surveys of 116 ovarian cancer patients who were treated at CTCA between January 2001 and December 2008.

CTCA Focuses on Your Quality of Life with Ovarian Cancer

At CTCA, we work with every patient, every day, to help you enjoy the highest possible quality of life. We combine advanced cancer treatment with integrated supportive therapies designed to keep you as physically healthy and active as possible. Meanwhile, we work with you and your family to help you address the emotional and interpersonal effects of ovarian cancer on you and your family.

To continuously improve your quality of life, we survey our patients about their emotional and physical well-being during treatment at our hospital. Comparing CTCA patients’ self-reported emotional and physical health to a widely accepted national benchmark of adults in the general population provides a good indication of the quality of life CTCA patients experience.

CTCA Tracks the Quality of Ovarian Cancer Patients’ Lives

We ask our patients about their ability to perform the basic activities of daily living. We ask how satisfied they are with their lives and we evaluate their overall sense of well-being. Our care teams use this ovarian cancer quality of life information to monitor and address specific cancer-related symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia and pain.

CTCA invites each patient to participate in quality of life assessments both before and during treatment. We use the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30), which is one of the most reliable quality of life questionnaires in cancer research. The "normal" levels of health in the general population shown above reflect information supplied by the EORTC's 2008 Reference Values Manual.
