Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer
Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is another innovative ovarian cancer treatment available at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). Intraperitoneal chemotherapy delivers chemotherapy drugs directly to the abdominal cavity.
We use this type of chemotherapy to directly target the ovaries and abdominal area with a higher concentration of chemotherapy drugs, while limiting the amount that reaches the rest of the body. This allows the chemotherapy to “bathe” the abdomen for a longer period of time and treats microscopic disease throughout the abdomen.
During the treatment, chemotherapy drugs are injected through a catheter, which is implanted during debulking surgery. Most women receive intravenous chemotherapy at the same time as intraperitoneal chemotherapy. We typically treat patients every three weeks for a total of six treatments.
