Biotherapy / Immunotherapy for Ovarian Cancer

Offering new and innovative methods is a natural extension of our integrative approach to ovarian cancer treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).

Immunotherapy (sometimes called biological therapy, biotherapy, or biological response modifier therapy) is one of the innovative ovarian cancer treatment options we offer at CTCA. Biotherapy harnesses the power of the body’s own power of protection (its immune system), either directly or indirectly, to fight cancer.

Ovarian cancer may develop when the immune system breaks down or is not functioning adequately. Biotherapy is designed to repair, stimulate, or enhance the natural immune responses of your body. Aside from fighting ovarian cancer, biotherapy may help strengthen the body against side effects caused by conventional ovarian cancer treatments.

Biotherapy can be used as a stand-alone ovarian cancer treatment, or it may be used in conjunction with other modalities such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Biotherapy/Immunotherapy may be used to:

  • Halt or interfere with the growth process of ovarian cancer cells
  • Make ovarian cancer cells more recognizable, and therefore more susceptible, to destruction by your immune system
  • Boost the killing power of your immune system cells, including T-cells, NK-cells and macrophages
  • Alter ovarian cancer cells' growth patterns to promote behavior like that of healthy cells
  • Block or reverse the process that changes a normal cell or a pre-cancerous cell into a cancerous cell
  • Enhance your body’s ability to repair or replace normal cells damaged or destroyed by other forms of ovarian cancer treatment (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation)
  • Prevent ovarian cancer cells from spreading to other parts of your body
