Learn about ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer develops when cells in the ovaries begin to grow out of control. The majority of ovarian cancers are epithelial ovarian carcinomas, also referred to simply as carcinomas. The ovaries are two almond-shaped glands located in the pelvis, on either side of the uterus. The ovaries are found only in women and produce eggs during the reproductive years (the time from the first menstrual period through menopause). The female hormones estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries.

Ovarian cancer diagnostic evaluations

Understanding the extent of ovarian cancer helps our experts formulate a treatment plan for your specific cancer type and stage. Our cancer experts use advanced diagnostics and tools to determine the type and stage of ovarian cancer. Your medical oncologist may recommend imaging tests, such as ultrasound or CT scans, blood tests or a biopsy to remove a tissue sample. Once a diagnosis is obtained, your care team will recommend a personalized ovarian cancer treatment plan tailored to you and your needs.
