Accelerated and Hyperfractionated Radiation Therapy for Oral Cancer
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we use accelerated hyperfractionation, or hyperfractionated radiation therapy for some of our oral cancer patients. This advanced treatment is given twice a day, and at a higher frequency than standard external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).
Studies have found that tumors can be controlled more effectively when radiation is given twice a day during the course of treatment. However, because the dose of radiation is higher, this type or oral cancer treatment may also cause more side effects than other types of radiation therapy.
If radiation therapy is the appropriate treatment for you, your doctor will work closely with you to explain all of the available options, including ways to minimize and treat any possible side effects.
