Immunochemotherapy for NHL
The cancer experts at CTCA will often use a combination of strategies to eliminate non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and prevent recurrence. Depending on your individual diagnosis and other factors unique to you, your NHL care team may recommend immunochemotherapy (also called chemoimmunotherapy).
As its name implies, this treatment is a combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Immunotherapy is the use of certain agents that stimulate the immune system to attack and destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs designed to destroy or slow the growth of cancer cells.
A common immunochemotherapy regimen for NHL is CHOP-R, which is a combination of the CHOP chemotherapy regime and the monoclonal antibody rituximab.
Helping You Maintain Your Quality of Life
Immunochemotherapy may temporarily lower your blood cell counts, causing various side effects. For example, anemia (low red blood cell count) can cause fatigue and shortness of breath. In addition, neutropenia (low white blood cell count) can make you more susceptible to infection.
Your NHL care team anticipates and proactively manages the potential side effects of immunochemotherapy for NHL. Throughout your treatment, we’ll do routine blood tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC). To help restore your counts to normal levels, we may provide certain drugs or modify your treatment regime.
You will also receive various supportive therapies, such as nutrition therapy, naturopathic medicine, pain management, oncology rehabilitation, and mind-body medicine. These therapies are designed to keep you strong and nutritionally fortified, reduce side effects, and increase your sense of well-being throughout your NHL treatment.
