Cancer Support...Online

If cancer used to separate us, it now brings us together. The Internet has created new possibilities in the cancer realm.

Now more than ever, patients and their loved ones are turning to online social networks for mutual support and information. These virtual communities can help you feel more connected, in control, and empowered during cancer treatment and beyond.

Connecting With Others

Social networking refers to interactions among individuals with common experiences or interests. Many people affected by cancer—patients, caregivers, family, friends, and survivors—share similar frustration, fear, worry, uncertainty, or helplessness. Now you can use social networks to connect with them.

Online social networks provide a platform on which to share with others, through chat forums, support groups, message boards, personal blogs, and video journals. During your cancer journey, you can use social networking to:

  • Update others about your (or your loved one’s) health status
  • Share personal experiences, videos and photos
  • Express your thoughts and feelings
  • Learn about available treatment options
  • Learn how to better cope with the disease

Why Use Social Networks?

Online social networks are not constrained by distance or time. You can build a personal network of support and understanding from your computer. And, you can control your interactions with your support system. If you’re feeling tired, sick, or not in the mood to talk to anyone, you can let your online community know without dealing with multiple phone calls or emails.

Social networking can help those affected by cancer:

  • Feel connected and empowered
  • Express feelings and concerns
  • Gain support and encouragement
  • Reduce fear, depression and helplessness
  • Improve overall quality of life

Social Networking Sites

There are general social networking sites, as well as sites specifically for individuals affected by illnesses like cancer. Also, most sites allow you to select privacy levels. So, you can choose the information you would like to make available to your entire network, or to certain individuals only.

The following are some examples of common social networking sites:

Tips for Using Social Networking During Cancer Treatment

  • Social Networking During Cancer CareFind a community that fits your needs. By connecting with others, you don’t have to face cancer alone. Your online community can help you make sense of your experiences and transform your outlook about the disease. Try to find a social networking site that works for you, such as one that is cancer-focused, where you can connect with others who understand your unique situation.
  • Organize your online community. Use the resources in your community wisely. Rather than making multiple phone calls or sending several emails, you can communicate with everyone in your network at once by updating your profile. Sharing your treatment journey and experiences with others can help you feel connected even when you aren’t in the mood to see anyone.
  • Verify information with your doctor. Although well-intentioned community members may offer advice about treatment options, only a qualified medical professional can provide accurate information that pertains to your unique diagnosis and needs. Acting on misinformation can negatively affect your healing, so don’t take medical advice without checking with your health care team first.
  • Apply what you learn to make informed decisions. Your online community can provide insight into new treatment options and/or coping techniques you may not have been aware of before. Share the information with your doctor to find out if anything can be applied to your situation. Learning more about the disease and its treatment options can help you make informed decisions about your care, and feel empowered and in control.
  • Request help if you need it. Some online communities allow you to ask for help in the form of meals, rides to medical appointments, etc. Rather than asking one person, you can post your request to your entire community so those interested can sign up for a task of their choosing. This takes the pressure off of you and allows others to feel good about helping you.
