Head & Neck Cancer Treatment Options

There are a number of conventional treatment methods that can be utilized for head and neck cancers. When it is feasible, surgery is commonly used to remove cancer and to repair function. Radiation therapies can also be used in the treatment of these types of cancer. High-Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy can be useful in delivering the radiation to the affected areas precisely while sparing more of the surrounding organs and tissues. Another method which allows for precise delivery is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Utilizing a computer program, this method allows for the exact size, shape and position of tumors to determine a precise dose to be delivered to the area. Another conventional therapy that can be an effective treatment is chemotherapy. Fractioned dose chemotherapy allows a smaller dose to be administered over the course of several days, which can greatly reduce unpleasant side effects.
