Chiropractic Care for Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma and its treatment can cause stress on your musculoskeletal system (your bones, muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments). You may experience aches and pains in your neck and/or back, headaches or difficulty walking.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) offers chiropractic care services to restore the frame of the body so it can work more efficiently as a whole. When used during your multiple myeloma treatment, chiropractic care may help to:
- Correct bone, muscle and joint problems
- Restore nerve function
- Increase mobility
- Improve posture
- Relieve headaches
- Alleviate neck and low back pain/stiffness
Your Individual Chiropractic Evaluation
Depending on your individual diagnosis, multiple myeloma treatment regimen and other factors, your CTCA care team may recommend a consultation with a chiropractor.
During the initial meeting, your chiropractor will review your symptoms and perform a thorough history and physical assessment. If your care team determines chiropractic care is safe and appropriate for you*, your chiropractor will work with your oncologists and you to develop a plan.
Chiropractic Techniques During Multiple Myeloma Treatment
During your multiple myeloma treatment, our licensed chiropractors may use any of the following non-invasive manual techniques:
- Hands-on adjustments
- Massage
- Stretching
- Electrical stimulation of the muscles
- Traction
- Heat
- Ice
Throughout your multiple myeloma treatment, your care team will consistently monitor your scans and X-rays, as well as your lab results, to ensure safe delivery of care. After your treatment is complete, your chiropractor can arrange for you to continue receiving chiropractic care services near your home.
*While chiropractic care can be helpful for many multiple myeloma patients, it may not be for everyone. For example, chiropractic care is not recommended if your platelet counts are low.
