Registered and licensed dietitian Megan Gutierrez strives to help patients at our hospital in northern Illinois receive the nourishment they need to help maintain strength throughout their fight against cancer.

She says, "Cancer treatment affects each person differently, therefore it’s crucial as professionals that we treat the whole person, meet them where they are at and individualize their care to the best of their needs."

Gutierrez provides nutrition consultations and therapy to new and returning patients. During patients’ return visits to the hospital, she meets with them to ensure they are continuing to intake adequate nutrition. Because Gutierrez sees her patients regularly and is a key member of their integrated care teams, she is continually involved in their care and informed of each step of their treatment. This allows her to stay on top of treatment side effects patients may have that impact their nutritional status. For example, patients undergoing chemotherapy may experience barriers to eating such as nausea, vomiting, constipation or mouth sores.

“If patients experience side effects that prevent them from eating, I’m always hopeful there is something nutritionally I can help them with,” she adds.

Gutierrez became a member of the nutrition therapy team in September 2013. She says, “I like working with a team of dietetics professionals whom I collaborate with to enhance my learning and professional growth.”

Gutierrez holds a master's degree in human nutrition from Arizona State University and a bachelor's degree in human ecology from Ohio State University. She completed a dietetic internship through Arizona State University, with clinical rotations at medical facilities in the Phoenix area. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the academy’s Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group.

In her free time, Gutierrez enjoys cooking, meeting new people, taking dance classes, practicing yoga and being with family and friends.
