Dr. Jonathan Kiev is an experienced thoracic surgeon at our northern Illinois hospital. He performs advanced and minimally invasive surgical procedures to treat lung cancer as well as other types of cancer that have spread to the lungs. Dr. Kiev also performs surgery to treat esophageal cancer and tumors involving mediastinal structures. Some of the procedures he commonly performs include mediastinoscopy and lobectomy.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Kiev earned a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed a surgical internship at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, followed by a surgical residency at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. He then completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California and a minimally invasive thoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Kiev completed a fellowship in advanced thoracic surgery at Mayo Clinic.
Before pursuing a medical degree, he completed a bachelor’s degree at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.
Prior to joining our team of cancer experts in February 2014, Dr. Kiev was an associate professor of surgery at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He also served as an attending surgeon at hospitals in Maryland and Washington, D.C., as well as Director of Thoracic Surgical Services and assistant professor of surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Kiev is a member of a number of professional associations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Kiev has researched chemotherapy resistance and sensitivity in lung tumors and has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Vascular Surgery, The American Surgeon and The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has also contributed to the Johns Hopkins Manual of Cardiothoracic Surgery and has served as a guest reviewer for The American Journal of Surgery and The American Surgeon.
An avid tennis player, Dr. Kiev enjoys hitting the tennis courts in his spare time.
