“Working side by side enables each patient’s care team members to provide recommendations together,” says John Birdsall, a naturopathic resident at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) outside of Chicago. “This approach keeps patients at the center of their care.”
Birdsall earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Western Illinois University and a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois.
As an undergraduate, he worked as a clinical research assistant and physical therapy aide at CTCA and as a lab technician in microbiology at his university. During his naturopathic training, Birdsall served as a teaching assistant in various disciplines. Additionally, he completed a clinical internship, during which he performed physical exams, obtained patient histories and performed clinical tests. He joined CTCA in May 2014.
Birdsall is a member of the Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Birdsall appreciates the involvement of patients in the decision-making process at CTCA. “Cancer treatment can have many different effects on a patient,” he says. “Understanding the risks, benefits and treatment options empowers patients to understand their disease and choose what they feel is right for their lives.”
Birdsall especially enjoys spending time with patients. “CTCA enables me to take my time to get to know our patients,” he says.
When he is not at CTCA, Birdsall enjoys spending time with his family and fishing.
