Cancer Treatment Center of America (CTCA) clinical oncology dietitian Ashley Chrisinger’s goal for her patients always meets a warm welcome. “Comfort and a good relationship with food,” as she explains it, “and having patients decide the goals and strategies that fit best into their lifestyles.”
Chrisinger studied dietetics at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, graduating with a bachelor of science in 2009. She began her career before graduating, developing recipes for the cafe at her university’s College of Professional Studies and serving as a diet counselor at the University Student Health Center. After graduating, she completed a dietetic internship at the University of Maryland, College Park. During rotations in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore , including at the National Cancer Institute, she gained experience with the particular needs of cancer patients. Chrisinger joined CTCA in 2012.
As a clinical oncology dietitian, Chrisinger works with patients to identify ways in which dietary changes might assist in finding relief from symptoms and improving their comfort. She works closely with clinicians to find ways to integrate nutrition into cancer care. And she also makes sure to emphasize what doesn’t need changing. “I always remind patients of what they’re already doing well, in terms of eating and physical activity,” says Chrisinger.
In her free time, Chrisinger enjoys backpacking and running marathons.
