"My patients and I are in a partnership. It's teamwork. We work together to find the treatments that are right for them."

Dr. Patricia Thompson
Medical Oncologist

Dr. Patricia Thompson defines compassion in every sense of the word. She welcomes her patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center with heartwarming smiles and hugs, and cares for them as though they were dear members of her own family.

Dr. Thompson understands that her patients and their families have questions and worries. The kindhearted medical oncologist, who speaks English and Spanish fluently, takes time to sit with her patients and learn about what they are experiencing. She carefully listens to their concerns, answers their questions and encourages them to never lose sight of hope. She expresses genuine concern for each of her patients.

Education is a major component of the personalized care that Dr. Thompson provides to her patients. She explains their diagnosis and treatment options in detail and at a level they can understand.

She says, “I believe that if patients learn about the cancer they are fighting, their treatment options and anything their treatment involves, including side effects, they will have more hope and be better equipped to deal with the disease.”

Dr. Thompson also empowers her patients and their families, involving them in the decision-making process when selecting treatments.

Dr. Thompson is board certified in internal medicine. She earned a medical degree from the University of Miami, where she received several awards, including Outstanding Medical Student of the Year 2000 for Excellence in Internal Medicine. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida, where she graduated cum laude.

Dr. Thompson completed a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of South Florida, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa and a residency in internal medicine at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

In 2005, she received the Foundation Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Thompson has published on the subject of metastatic renal cancer in the prestigious Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. In addition, she has conducted research on a number of types of cancer, including malignant melanoma, advanced renal cell carcinoma, and basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. She has also researched immunotherapy extensively.

Before pursuing her medical degree, Dr. Thompson studied to be a dancer at the National School of Dance in Argentina, where she was born and raised. She was inspired by her mother, who was a renowned dancer. But looking back, she says doesn’t regret her decision to put away her leotards and dancing shoes in exchange for a stethoscope and lab coat.

She says, “I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. Caring for people has always been my true calling.”
