“I have always held patient-centered care as the gold standard for my practice of naturopathic medicine,” says naturopath Eliot Edwards. “I do my best to meet all the needs of my patients, and I try to anticipate those needs. I work hard to take care of my patients and treat them the way I would want myself or my family members to be taken care of.”
Edwards says when he discovered Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), he found a healthcare organization that held true to the same high standard of care he has long lived by. He adds that he was also impressed by the way CTCA integrates naturopathic medicine with conventional medicine to provide patients with more treatment options.
“Being able to offer natural supplements that can minimize side effects and help patients to endure conventional cancer treatment is tremendously rewarding,” notes Edwards. “Very few cancer centers offer this aspect of cancer care and I’m thrilled to be a part of CTCA for that reason.”
Edwards says he feels privileged to work with patients at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center, helping to improve their quality of life and renew their sense of hope.
“A diagnosis of cancer changes a person forever, no matter the outcome of the disease,” he says. “That change can be very positive and I try to help facilitate that positive change.”
Edwards believes it’s important for patients to help make decisions about their treatment.
He says, “I encourage my patients to be involved in the decision making. It helps them to feel empowered and in control, and helps them to realize they are active participants in their health. It also requires them to become more educated so that they better understand their condition and the available treatment options. As a naturopathic provider, I assist patients in understanding this role and the options they have for treatment."
Before joining CTCA in January 2009, Edwards practiced naturopathic medicine in New York. He served patients at the Complementary Medicine & Healing Arts center in Vestal, New York and the Natural Path practice in Oneonta, New York. He also gained experience as a naturopath at the Center for Integrative Health and Healing in Delmar, New York.
Edwards attended the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine. He completed a bachelor of science degree in physics at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, where years later he served as an adjunct lecturer. Edwards taught courses in current health problems and issues, as well as lifestyle and fitness. He also mentored students who were interested in pursuing a career in naturopathic medicine as part of the college’s holistic health internship.
Edwards is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians. He has also served as vice president of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Edwards loves nature and the outdoors. He has been an avid cyclist for more than 20 years. Other activities he enjoys that help to keep his mind and body healthy include cross-country skiing, kayaking and fly fishing.
