The opportunity to be part of a team of oncologists, pathologists, naturopaths, dietitians, and many other experts who are focused on fighting cancer attracted Dr. Charles Komen Brown to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). The highly skilled, board-certified surgical oncologist joined the staff at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in January 2009.
Dr. Brown also serves as the hospital’s Medical Director of Surgery and as the National Director of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for CTCA.
Dr. Brown says working within the CTCA integrated, multidisciplinary setting with dedicated professionals who are driven toward the same goal has been very rewarding.
The surgical oncologist is committed to helping patients with cancer and improving their quality of life. He enjoys getting to know his patients and answering their questions to help them learn about the disease they are fighting.
Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Brown served as an attending surgeon, assistant professor of surgery and co-director of the surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He was also an attending surgeon for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in biological medicine from the University of Florida, he simultaneously completed a PhD in virology and a medical degree at the university.
Dr. Brown completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Arizona Affiliated Hospitals in Tucson, where he served as chief resident in general surgery. He completed fellowships in biological therapy for cancer at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and in surgical oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. In addition, he garnered experience as a research fellow and clinical associate in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Brown is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Among the accolades Dr. Brown has received are the Federal Executive Board’s Excellence in Government Award for Research, as well as the Robert Baker Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Charles E. Huggins Research Award, both from the University of Chicago’s Department of Surgery.
Dr. Brown co-wrote the Holland-Frei Manual of Cancer Medicine published in 2005. He has researched and written extensively on cancer-related subjects, including gene therapy, targeted therapy for melanoma and medical management of melanoma. His work has been published in such renowned clinical publications as Clinical Cancer Research, the Annals of Surgical Oncology and the International Journal of Cancer.
Dr. Brown is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Association for Cancer Research, Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
