Your Personalized Radiation Treatment Plan

Crafting the right plan of attack to eradicate cancer is an art form. It requires dexterity, creativity, determination, and total collaboration from you and your entire team of doctors and specialists. Together, you and your CTCA team of cancer experts will create and implement a cancer treatment plan tailored to you.

Dr. Eden and nurse practitioner Guy Torres consult with a patient

Putting together your cancer-fighting plan begins the day you arrive at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern) for your initial consultation. In our New Patient Clinic, you’ll meet with a doctor who will help you determine if radiation therapy may be a treatment option.

If radiation therapy is an option for you, you’ll then meet with one of our experienced radiation oncologists. Your CTCA radiation oncologist will thoroughly review your medical history, imaging and diagnostic tests (e.g., CT scans, PET/CT scans, MRIs), and will examine you. These are among a number of critical steps he will make to formulate his customized treatment recommendations for you. Factors he will also consider include the type of cancer you have; the size of the tumor and its location; whether you’ve undergone previous treatments, and if so, what the dosage of radiation was; as well as if you have additional medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease).

“We work with each of our patients to provide treatment options that best meet his or her individual needs,” says Dr. Eden. “There is no one-size-fits-all plan for treating cancer.”

Additionally, your radiation oncologist will consider the way in which the radiation therapy should be delivered and which specific therapies offer you the greatest benefit. For example, TomoTherapy® is able to strike hard-to-reach tumors, such as those in the head and neck. And, it’s able to pinpoint the radiation onto these tumors and avoid harm to nearby normal tissue.

Your CTCA radiation oncologist, nurse practitioner or radiation oncology nurse will meet with you weekly throughout your treatment. They’ll be sure to answer every question you have, help you feel at ease and keep you well informed throughout the stages of your fight against cancer.

Dr. Eden emphasizes, “Everyone diagnosed with cancer deserves to have all of their treatment options explained to them so they can make treatment decisions based on what’s best for their condition.”
