Naturopathic Modalities at Our Hospital
CTCA offers the following types of naturopathic treatment:
Botanical (herbal) medicine
The use of plant medicine is core to naturopathic medicine. Botanical medicines are used in both traditional herbal formulations (such as tinctures) and as herbal supplements (such as capsules or teas). They are able to address a variety of problems, simultaneously. The subtle nature of most botanicals makes them very compatible with your body's chemistry. They can work gently with your body to create a response, and with few side effects.
Homeopathic medicine
Homeopathy was developed in the 1840s. It uses specially prepared remedies to address symptoms based on the concept of "like cures like." Clinical observation indicates that it works on a subtle, yet powerful level to strengthen your immune system, reduce side effects or symptoms, and stimulate healing. Your naturopathic oncology provider may recommend homeopathic therapies for a variety of issues. Some of these include surgical recovery, and/or to alleviate nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and hot flashes.
Clinical nutrition
The concept “let your food be your medicine and medicine your food" has long been a foundation of naturopathic medicine. Some medical conditions may be treated with foods and nutritional supplements with fewer complications and side effects than by traditional medical means. Our naturopathic oncology providers rely heavily on our registered dietitians to best help manage your food intake and calories.
Traditional Chinese medicine
Naturopathic oncology providers are trained in the fundamentals of Eastern medicine, also known as traditional Chinese medicine. Your naturopathic oncology provider may suggest acupressure and Chinese herbal medicines. Additionally, a licensed acupuncturist is a member of our team and is available to provide acupuncture treatment, onsite.
Hydrotherapy
The use of various temperatures and applications of water, compresses or poultices is a traditional naturopathic treatment. Your naturopathic oncology provider can show you how to use applications of warm and/or cool water to help stimulate your immune system, promote healthy digestion and elimination, and to help decrease pain or inflammation.
Physical medicine
Your naturopathic oncology provider may suggest the use of basic tools of naturopathic manipulative therapy (e.g., massage, physical therapy, spinal manipulation) to help treat chronic pain, numbness and tingling or other physical issues you may have.
Environmental medicine
People today may be exposed to potentially toxic chemicals in their environment and food supply. To address this, your naturopathic oncology provider may employ naturopathic detoxification methods and immune restoration therapy in your treatment.
Counseling and stress management
Mental attitudes and emotional states can be important elements in healing and disease. Your naturopathic oncology provider is trained in various psychological techniques, including counseling and stress management. They will incorporate this support, as needed, and also refer you to our mind-body experts for additional support.
