What to Expect from Your Initial Consultation

Pam Orsburn at Midwestern Regional Medical Center

On day 1 of your first visit to CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern), you’ll meet face to face with Dr. Redei and Pam Orsburn, the program’s transplant coordinator. Dr. Redei will review your medical records and talk with you extensively about your disease. He’ll also determine if you need to undergo additional diagnostic testing, such as lab work or imaging tests. If you need to have tests performed, you’ll undergo them at the hospital on day 2 or 3. Once you’ve completed the testing, Dr. Redei will review your test results and move quickly to come up with an aggressive plan to fight your disease. On day 4 or 5, you and your family will meet with Dr. Redei again. He will:

What Should Patients Receiving Treatment Expect?

Once you’ve begun treatment at Midwestern, you’ll primarily spend your time for treatment in the Hematology Oncology Department’s wing of the hospital, also referred to as the Stem Cell Unit. This area is almost a mini-hospital in its own right, complete with an outpatient clinic, infusion center and inpatient rooms. It’s here where we care for many of our hematologic cancer patients through their entire continuum of care—from their preparation for a stem cell transplant, through the transplant itself, all the way through their follow-up care.

Throughout your treatment, you’ll receive constant and compassionate care from Dr. Redei’s team of clinicians. You’ll also have a care manager who will work with you to make sure that your insurance information is properly taken care of and thoroughly explained to you. And, you’ll regularly meet with many of your other CTCA care team members (e.g., dietitians, mind-body therapists, naturopaths) in the Stem Cell Unit. They are happy to visit you here for your appointments.
