Nurse practitioner Soumya Donohoe has been a member of many of our patients’ care teams at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center since 2003. She works alongside two of the hospital’s medical oncologists, Dr. Rakhshanda Neelam and Dr. Patricia Thompson, to provide quality oncology care, education and counseling.
Like all of the nurse practitioners on staff at CTCA hospitals, Donohoe has fulfilled graduate-level education requirements and advanced clinical training beyond her preparation as a registered nurse. She earned a master of science degree in oncology nursing from Yale University after completing a bachelor of science degree in molecular and cell biology at the University of Connecticut.
Donohoe is credentialed as an adult nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Additionally, she is certified by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation as an oncology certified nurse and an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner.
Among her responsibilities as a CTCA nurse practitioner, Donohoe obtains patients’ medical histories; performs physical examinations; orders and interprets lab and imaging tests; writes orders for chemotherapy; and, prescribes medication to treat symptoms and side effects. She also helps to coordinate the care of patients while they are at home. As the team lead, she helps maintain a high standard of quality care among all practitioners.
Donohoe realized she wanted to establish her nurse practitioner career at CTCA while still studying at Yale.
“Like so many of our patients, I too was drawn to this wonderful place of healing and hope when I saw one of the television commercials,” she recalls. “I knew CTCA was the place for me. I knew it would allow me the opportunity to provide the type of compassionate, comprehensive, holistic, oncology care I had envisioned and studied.”
Donohoe enjoys listening to her patients and being attentive to their needs. She tries to address each of their concerns.
“I want to know them as individuals, so we try to discuss daily life events in addition to treatment management,” she says. “This might include discussing hobbies they enjoy or a recent trip they’ve gone on with their family. It’s always good to take some focus away from the cancer. It does not define their lives, so it doesn’t always have to define the visit.”
Before her current position as a medical oncology nurse practitioner, Donohoe served as a gynecologic oncology nurse practitioner at Midwestern under the direction of Dr. Sybilann Williams.
Prior to joining the CTCA family, Donohoe chose to travel the country gaining experience as an inpatient oncology nurse at several well-known facilities, including Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, Hospital of Saint Raphael in Connecticut, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in California, Scripps Green Hospital in California, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Illinois.
