"I think one of the most important aspects in helping patients recover is to consistently address their concerns and expectations all the while providing encouragement, understanding, compassion and education."
Susan Sears, MMS, PA-C
Physician Assistant
“I can emphatically say I love taking care of our patients,” says Susan Sears, a surgical oncology physician assistant at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center.
Sears provides inpatient and outpatient care for cancer patients who have either undergone surgery or are about to undergo surgery. She provides preoperative and postoperative evaluations in the hospital’s outpatient clinic, as well as inpatient postoperative care from the day of surgery until the patient is discharged from the hospital.
Sears works closely with many of our surgeons, including Dr. Charles Komen Brown, Medical Director of Surgery. While the surgeons are in the operating room or seeing patients in the clinic, she is responsible for determining and managing the care of recovering surgical patients.
She notes, “Throughout patients’ hospitalization, I not only provide medical care and wound care, but also education to help patients and their loved ones through the course of recovery. This helps them feel more in control during their healing process.”
Sears takes time to listen to patients, comfort them and address their concerns.
Sears earned a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Upon graduating from Midwestern University in 2006, Sears gained experience as a physician assistant working as a first assist for a cardiothoracic surgeon, and as a primary care provider in a family practice.
