"My passion lies in helping people learn how to manage the difficult thoughts and feelings that challenge their ability to maintain a healthy and balanced perspective on life when struggling with the physical symptoms of cancer and various treatment side effects."

Mind-Body Therapist
Licensed clinical professional counselor Sharon Lorang provides counseling to cancer patients and their families at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. She became a member of the hospital’s Mind-Body Medicine Department in August 2011. She works closely with medical oncologists Dr. Patricia Thompson and Dr. Ashwin Sheelvanth, helping address emotional and psychological issues their patients face as they undergo cancer treatment.
“While the culture at CTCA is set up to be supportive and nurturing, my role as a mind-body therapist is centered around providing a space and time for processing complex feelings that accompany an illness like cancer,” notes Lorang. “Providing an empathic ear and a space to process challenging emotions is important. Cancer of course is a frightening illness that can stimulate an existential crisis in our lives. Patients and their families can come to me for therapeutic support to help sort out the confusion and fear that naturally presents itself in such a time of crisis.”
She adds, “I believe there is a need to process such feelings as fear, anger, grief, sadness and a certain sense of powerlessness that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. When I meet with patients, I talk about the roller coaster of emotions, and like to offer the reflection that it is truly human to feel. The feelings we have tell us who we are, what’s really important to us, and ultimately offer us a chance to grow and learn.”
Lorang says in addition to counseling sessions, she offers other mind-body modalities such as guided imagery, Reiki therapy and meditation to help relax patients.
Lorang earned a master’s degree in counseling from Loyola University in Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Previously, she worked as a counselor for an outpatient counseling facility in Gurnee, Illinois and as a part-time clinic therapist in Evanston, Illinois.
