“What I enjoy most about working at Cancer Treatment Centers of America is the relationships I’ve built with patients,” says Samantha Jones.
In June 2010, the registered and licensed dietitian joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Illinois. She says, above all, what separates CTCA from other hospitals is the multidisciplinary and patient-centered approach to caring for cancer patients.
Jones works on a dedicated care team led by Dr. Patricia Thompson, a medical oncologist. She also works alongside a naturopathic oncology provider, care manager, and registered nurse.
“Our team works very well together,” says Jones. “Dr. Thompson is a great teacher. She thoroughly explains each patient’s medical history, the state of the disease, and his or her treatment plan.”
Jones strives to help cancer patients improve their quality of life. She provides nutrition consultations, assessing patients for nutritional risks such as weight loss, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. She then offers customized, evidenced-based nutrition recommendations and information to each patient. Her goals are to help patients maintain strength and manage treatment side effects.
She adds, “I monitor patients’ progress with their nutritional plans and provide tips to continually help them meet their nutritional needs and minimize treatment side effects.”
Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Iowa State University. After graduation, she completed a dietetic internship at a medical center in Georgia.
In her free time, Jones loves to read, run, bike, cook, bake, and most importantly, hang out with her dogs.
